The following list contains
mistakes that people often make when attempting to learn the Thai language.
Avoiding these mistakes will allow you to conquer the Thai language in a fast
and efficient manner.
#1 - Not utilising spaced repetition software.
One of the biggest tasks that language learners face is the task
of learning and remembering large amounts of vocabulary. Often a student will
spend time learning new vocabulary only to find that he or she cannot recall it
in a few weeks time. Fortunately, there is a fairly new and very effective way
to combat this. The technique is called spaced repetition testing. Spaced
repetition testing is used throughout the HighSpeedThai program to ensure that
whenever you learn something new it is deeply imbedded into your memory.
This inturn means that you will be able to recall vocabulary when you need it
most. Click here
for more information on how the HighSpeedThai program ensures that when you
learn something new you will retain it for the long term.
#2 - Attempting to learn new vocabulary out of context
If a word is presented to you in rich context you will learn how
that word is used, how it fits into a sentence and you won’t need to memorise
any tedious grammatical terms. Learning a language in context will therefore
allow you to speak more quickly and fluently because you won’t need to
consciously piece together each and every sentence in your mind prior to saying
them out loud. Great care has been taken to ensure that the new words which you
are taught in the HighSpeedThai system are always presented to you in a wide
variety of rich contexts. You will find that new words are often used in 10 or
more completely different scenarios.
This mutli-contextual exposure will help your brain assimilate new vocabulary
with very little conscious effort.
#3 - Not being exposed to enough spoken Thai.
It is very important that you tune your eat into a new language and the best way
to do this is to listen to the language. It is very important that beginners
are exposed to as much Thai audio as possible. Other systems give you one or
two audio CDs, the HighSpeedThai program
includes over 78 hours of audio which is the equivalent of 56 traditional audio
CDs. Listening to these will result in the development of good
pronunciation habits, the ability to easily recall how a word is pronounced and
the capability to comprehend others with ease.
We recommended that you copy the audio to your MP3 player. This way you can
easily and conveniently listen to the audio when you are out shopping,
exercising or driving. If you do not have a MP3 player, you can be purchase one
online inexpensively.
#4 - Learning formal written vocabulary rather than spoken
colloquial vocabulary.
You will find that a lot of the resources on the Thai language tend to focus on
teaching you more formal written Thai rather than the informal Thai that is
used on the streets. In the HighSpeedThai system you will learn vocabulary
that will be immediately useful to you.
According to the department of applied
linguistics at Cambridge University, the 1000 most common English words make up
84.3% of the vocabulary used in conversation, 82.3% of the
vocabulary used in fiction, 75.6% of the vocabulary used in newspapers and
73.55% of the vocabulary used in academic texts. Although these statistics
apply to the English language, the same trend is true for all languages. By
concentrating on acquiring a highly useful vocabulary you as a language learner
will develop a broad understanding of the language in a very short period of
time.
The vocabulary that is taught in our program has been strategically selected
due to its high value and broad usage. For more information on the vocabulary
that you will learn in the HighSpeedThai system,

#5 - Learning vocabulary prior to being able to pronounce the
various Thai sounds.
There is not much point in learning new vocabulary if others cannot understand
you when you use it, or you cannot understand others when they use it. The Thai
language contains a number of sounds which are not present in English. It is
vitally important that you develop a reasonable ability to pronounce these
sounds prior to building your vocabulary. The pronunciation lessons in our
program will help you develop your pronunciation abilities quickly and easily.
#6 - Failing to get a good grip on the tones prior to
acquiring vocabulary.
This point is similar to the point above, in that it is fruitless to learn new
words if you cannot pronounce them. As Thai is a tonal language you will need a
reasonable capacity to pronounce the five tones prior to building your
vocabulary. Our precisely
constructed tone lessons will firstly build your ability to hear the
differences between the tones, and then only when you can hear the differences
between the tones, will you be taught how to pronounce them. You
will find that as you listen to more and more spoken Thai, your ability to
pronounce the tones will improve without requiring any conscious effort. For
more information on exactly how our program can help you with pronouncing the
Thai tones click here.
#7 - Putting off learning to read.
Like most people, you are probably not that interested in learning how to read
Thai. You may assume that learning to read Thai is a difficult task. You may
also question why learning to read is necessary. If you want to be able to
speak anything more than very basic Thai, knowing how to read will be your
biggest aid in improving your abilities to speak. By learning to read you will
dramatically improve your pronunciation as you will be able to couple a unique
sound with a particular letter. Transliterated words can often be pronounced in
a number of different ways, this often leads to incomprehensible pronunciation.
When you can read Thai you will be able to pronounce words exactly how they
should be pronounced. There are just too many reasons to outline here on why
learning to read is so critical to those who want to be able to speak the
language. We discuss these reasons in detail in our section on “Learning how to
read”.
Instead of being a difficult and time consuming task learning to read can be
straightforward and easy to accomplish when the right methods are used.
The section on how to read Thai which is included in the HighSpeedThai program
makes use of many proven memory retention principles to ensure quick and easy
learning. We have explained more on what these are and how they are
used here. When using the
HighSpeedThai program you
can expect to be reading Thai within 15 to 25 hrs of study.
#8 - Trying to learn too much at one time.
A language is best learnt in small easy to assimilate bite-sized chunks. By
approaching a language in this manner, you can be sure that you will never feel
overwhelmed by the task as a whole. You will feel a strong sense of achievement
as you conquer the language one step at a time. Learning a language is similar
to completing a large jigsaw puzzle. For example, if you were given a puzzle
which had 5,000 pieces, you would likely be overwhelmed by the task of putting
it together, and it is likely that you would ‘throw in the towel’ prior to
commencing it. Now let’s say that you were given the same jigsaw puzzle, but
this time the 5,000 pieces were sorted into small bags, where each bag
contained 100 adjoining pieces. Completing the jigsaw puzzle in this way, one
section at a time, would be a much easier and a more achievable task than
attempting to take on the whole 5,000 piece puzzle at one time. Every lesson in
the HighSpeedThai program has been broken down much like this. You will find
that each of the 81 lessons included in the program are easy to accomplish, and
at no stage will you feel overwhelmed by the task of learning the Thai
language.
The HighSpeedThai program has been constructed using proven secondary language
acquisition principles. You
